The day has FINALLY arrived, the 2016 Academy Awards is slowly upon us, and, as expected, this year is another nail-bitter right to the end for many of the winners. 2016 has proven to be a quite exceptional year of gloriously creative, original and visionary cinema. Thanks to the likes of filmmakers like Alejandro G. Iñárritu and his talented cast and crew, who brought us this year’s The Revenant, a film shot entirely with natural lighting, to George Miller’s awesome Mad Max: Fury Road, to the brilliant economic drama The Big Short, Oscar sure does have his hands full for 2016.
As we get excited and prepped for the big night of winners, Night Film Reviews will be providing LIVE coverage of the winners and predictions and reasons for each category, to get those last minute votes and ballots in.
So without further ado, lets get this party started.
*WINNERS WILL BE BOLD ONCE ANNOUNCED*
Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
*Spotlight*
Who I Want To Win: The Big Short, hands down, one of the most brutal, honest, compelling and down-right unbearable films of the year is a must see.
Who Should Win: The Big Short. See reasons above.
Who Will Win: The Big Short.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Bryan Cranston in Trumbo
Matt Damon in The Martian
*Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant*
Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl
Who I Want To Win: Leonardo DiCaprio; he just deserves it at this point and all the hype surrounding his win has come to this point.
Who Should Win: Leonardo DiCaprio. His performance in The Revenant is nothing short of immaculate.
Who Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio. It is HIS year to win it.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Cate Blanchett in Carol
*Brie Larson in Room*
Jennifer Lawrence in Joy
Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn
Who I Want To Win: Charlotte Rampling. Rampling in 45 Years is nothing short of dazzling. The film itself is spectacular and the performances, held together by Rampling, are as vivid and enticing as the film as a whole.
Who Should Win: Charlotte Rampling.
Who Will Win: Brie Larson.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale in The Big Short
Tom Hardy in The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight
*MARK RYLANCE in Bridge of Spies*
Sylvester Stallone in Creed
Who I Want To Win: Tom Hardy, one of, if not, my favourite actor working today is one of the most consistent faces in cinema. Although, don’t think its his time quite yet, and we are sure he will have many other opportunities to show his acting muscles.
Who Should Win: Mark Rylance. His performance in Bridge of Spies is haunting and unforgettable.
Who Will Win: Sylvester Stallone. All his continuations to Hollywood and his snub for the Original Rocky will get him the gold.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara in Carol
Rachel McAdams in Spotlight
*ALICIA VAKANDER in The Danish Girl*
Kate Winslet in Steve Jobs
Who I Want To Win: By far THE HARDEST CATEGORY ALL YEAR. If I had to choose one, my most memorable performance of the year is Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl, she is the ONLY redeeming factor of the whole film.
Who Should Win: Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hateful Eight. The film is flooded with men, including Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Channing Tatum, and JJL is by far the most kick ass and nastiest of them all.
Who Will Win: Alicia Vikander.
Best Achievement in Directing
Adam McKay for The Big Short
*Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant*
Lenny Abrahamsson for Room
George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road
Tom McCarthy for Spotlight
Who I Want To Win: Adam McKay for The Big Short. This film is the essence of intelligent writing, direction and execution and I hope for it to deserve its glory come Oscar time.
Who Should Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, I mean, all the stories you hear about his journey to making this film, it just seems deserving at this point.
Who Will Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
